The cheapest months are not the wet ones — they are the cold ones
Northern Vietnam does not behave like the south, and planners who assume it does book February and wonder where the bay went. Month by month, what you get, what you pay, and what you give up.
The year, month by month
| Months | Multiplier | Conditions | Verdict for a group |
|---|---|---|---|
| October – November | 1.20 – 1.30 | Dry, clear, 22–28°C, low humidity, calm water | Best of the year. Book 90–120 days ahead. |
| April – May | 1.05 – 1.15 | Warm, 24–30°C, generally clear, occasional shower | Second best and better value. Deck evenings reliable. |
| June – August | 1.15 – 1.25 | Hot, 33–36°C, humid, typhoon season | Domestic peak so rates stay high. Contingency mandatory. |
| September | 1.00 – 1.10 | Transitional, late typhoons possible, warm | Good value if the risk is accepted in writing. |
| March | 0.90 – 1.00 | Damp, low cloud, drizzle, 18–23°C | Sailable. Grey. Photographs will disappoint. |
| December – February | 0.75 – 0.85 | Cold, 12–18°C, persistent sea mist, poor visibility | Cheapest. Deck gala realistically unavailable. |
What the winter discount actually buys you
This is the part that surprises planners used to tropical destinations. In the south of Vietnam, the low season is the wet season and the risk is cancellation. Here, the low season is winter, and the risk is not cancellation at all — the ships sail perfectly well in January.
What you lose instead is the reason you came:
- The view. A persistent sea mist sits over the bay for much of December to February. The karsts appear as grey outlines a few hundred metres away. It has an atmosphere of its own, and it is not the bay in the photographs your CEO approved.
- The deck. At 14°C with damp air, a seated dinner on an open deck is not enjoyable. The gala moves into the dining room, which is smaller and has no stage.
- The water. Kayaking and swimming are cold-weather activities at that point. Most groups decline them, which removes half the daytime programme.
- The photographs. Worth stating separately because it is often the deliverable. Winter footage of the bay is grey and flat, and no amount of grading fixes it.
A small senior offsite of twelve to twenty-two, indoors, where the point is uninterrupted conversation rather than scenery, works extremely well in January and costs 25% less. The mist even helps. It is the large incentive group with an outdoor awards evening that should not book December to February.
Typhoon season, stated precisely
The typhoon season in the Gulf of Tonkin runs roughly June to October, with the highest frequency in July, August and September. What matters operationally is not the storm itself — it is the port authority's response, which is to withdraw departure clearance for the whole bay, usually the day before or the morning of.
This is not a delay you sail around. Nothing sails. Every operator is grounded simultaneously and there is no vessel anywhere on the bay that can take your group instead.
- We will not accept a group in the June to September window without a contracted shore alternative.
- The alternative is a named venue, held, with a written decision deadline — not something identified on the morning.
- Force majeure terms apply: a credit valid twelve months, not a cash refund. That is the industry position on this bay and we state it up front rather than in clause nineteen.
- Full detail on the port closure page.
Lead times by season
| Season | Under 44 guests | 45 – 88 | 89 – 200 |
|---|---|---|---|
| October – November | 60 days | 90 days | 120 days |
| April – May | 45 days | 75 days | 100 days |
| June – September | 45 days | 60 days | 90 days |
| December – March | 30 days | 45 days | 75 days |
The binding constraint in the peak is rarely the vessels — it is finding a shore venue for the gala on the same dates the fleet is free, which is why the large-group lead time doubles.
Questions we are asked most often
When exactly is the best time?
The second half of October and the first half of November. Dry, clear, 22–28°C, calm water and a sunset that lands at a civilised hour. It is also when everyone else wants it, which is why the multiplier is what it is.
Is it worth booking in the mist season to save 25%?
For an indoor programme with a small group, yes. For an incentive with an outdoor awards evening, no — you will save a quarter of the budget and lose most of the reason for the trip.
What about Tet?
The lunar new year period shuts down effectively for a week and rates around it are unpredictable. We would steer any corporate programme away from the two weeks either side.
Does the bay ever close outside typhoon season?
Occasionally, for strong northeast monsoon winds in winter. Less common and usually shorter, but it happens, and the same policy applies.
